Graphics and plaster block v2

Made Mille Miglia Wheels logos

And wheels

Later on I got some more plaster (this time plaster alabaster) and made another run. This time I used about 1 ½ kilos of plaster, much less water, and took more time to mix it. What do you know, second time is a charm.

Here is my new plaster block

I also bought some metal files a while back thinking I would use them to shape the plaster. With my ruined block I gave it a try. I was wrong. The plaster just builds up inside the file. Looks like plaster is something you cut rather than file.

Design of the car

Used vector graphic software to resize the images to 1/20 scale. Then traced the bitmap in vector form and deleted the scanned image

Then I deleted some lines, to make a livery template that I will use later to show how the car appeared at different grand prix.

Finally, I deleted a lot of lines, to make the template I will use for making a blank

Then I had a bit of a plaster disaster. I cut the image of the car out of paper.

And made sure that the 1/20 scale car would fit in my plastic dish

Got my materials ready

And then proceeded to follow the directions given to me at the store and mixed the plaster with way too much water.

Unfortunately this left me with not enough plaster to complete the job when I finally mixed it right, but I learned a lot.

Let's get it started

Well I received my book in the mail today, “The Modern Formula 1 Race Car,” and I really satisfied. It will make great reference material for scratch building.

I couldn’t wait, so I started today!

My first task with my newfound reference pictures is to make the Chesterfield logos that appear on the car. A while back I played with Corel Photopaint trying to modify the logo that appears on the real cigarette packages to look like the one on the car. I can see from my reference pictures that the logo on the car is a different font. Attempt one didn’t work. I downloaded a lot (and I mean A LOT!) of fonts and started to browse through them, but it was taking too much time, was too boring, and anyway, the font probably wasn’t in there. Second attempt failed.

So I got a new plan. I went and bought some black paper. I took some preliminary measurements and then I starting taping cut out black paper on white paper.

Once I was satisfied with my templates, I began taking measurements and drawing out the letters in reverse negative on the black paper and cutting them out.

Here is my work area

“S”s are difficult

And here it is, I’m quite satisfied with my work
